How do I report an error in a ring-size chart?

Email [email protected] if a Mesurix chart contains a figure, label, conversion or country assignment that appears wrong. Identify the page, row, country or size system, exact figure displayed, and replacement figure or calculation. A report that names the disagreement can be checked; “the chart is wrong” cannot.

For example, write that the US 7 row shows a particular diameter but the published formula gives 17.32 mm. Include a link to the relevant ring size chart, quote the displayed units and name the source used for the proposed correction. If the source relies on a standard, include the standard rather than calling it only “the official size”.

A ring size is one number: the inner diameter of the band, measured in millimetres. Mesurix’s US and Canada formula is:

The calculation gives US 7 as 17.32 mm. One whole US size changes the diameter by 0.8128 mm, which is about 2.55 mm of circumference. A report should not confuse a diameter with a circumference, even when both describe the same ring.

The EU convention, including ISO 8653, uses the inner circumference in millimetres as the size. EU/ISO 54 therefore means an inner circumference of 54 mm. France and Switzerland subtract 40 from the circumference in millimetres, so FR 14 also means 54 mm. These labels are different scales, not three different ring measurements.

The UK, Australia and Ireland use letters with half steps. Their formula is:

circumference (mm) = 37.14 + 1.28 × s

Here, s counts half-letter steps from A. US 7 converts to UK N 1/2. A chart correction should preserve the half step instead of forcing the result into a whole letter.

Japan uses the JIS numerical scale. The same numerical scale appears in the relevant Korea and China listings:

The inverse is:

n = 3 × diameter - 38

US 7 converts to JP 14. Korean sellers also quote the same 호 numbers as the Japanese 号 scale, but some Korean shops use 호 for circumference in millimetres instead. Check for a millimetre figure beside the number before treating a Korean listing as a Japanese-style size. This is a seller-labelling trap, not a rounding difference.

A source is particularly important when a report concerns a national scale. Name ISO/IEC 7810 for a card dimension, ISO 8653 for the EU ring-size convention or JIS for the Japanese scale. How can Mesurix help with a ring measurement?

Mesurix support can explain a reading, help with screen calibration and convert a result between ring-size systems. Send the measured inner diameter or circumference in millimetres, the target country or size system, the finger measured and the approximate band width. State whether the number came from a ring, a finger-measure mode, a strip of material or another method.

The browser measurement tools use a one-off calibration against a bank card. An ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 card measures 85.60 mm × 53.98 mm. The ID-1 format is used for bank cards, most national identity cards, driving licences and many transport cards. Its known physical length gives the screen a physical reference; that is why a card can calibrate a phone or monitor.

A CSS pixel is defined against a 96 dpi reference display. A browser still cannot know the physical size of pixels on the particular panel displaying the page. A phone can scale a CSS pixel differently from another phone. Calibration supplies the missing screen-specific measurement instead of assuming that every on-screen millimetre has the same physical size.

After calibration, the arithmetic can be exact for the calibrated scale. The result still depends on the card being aligned with the guide and the ring being placed correctly. This is the important distinction: exact arithmetic does not turn an uncertain physical placement into a certified measurement.

Measure the inside of the ring. Do not measure the outside edge or the width of the metal. Centre the ring over the on-screen guide, keep it flat against the screen without forcing it down, and read the inner edge in the same way on both sides. If the inner diameter is 17.32 mm, the corresponding circumference is 54.4 mm and the reference conversion is US 7, UK N 1/2, EU/ISO 54, JP/KR 14 and FR 14.

Timing changes the number on your finger. Fingers are largest late in the day and after heat, exercise or salty food. They are smallest on a cold morning. The spread across one day is easily a quarter of a US size. Take readings at more than one time instead of treating a cold-morning result as the permanent size.

When two sizes are possible, choose the larger one. A ring must pass the knuckle to go on and come off. A loose ring can be tightened with sizing beads or a fitted bar. String and paper-strip methods have a known failure mode. They stretch and compress, so they can read a quarter to a half size high or low depending on how hard the material is pulled. Calibration details matter when the complaint concerns a measurement.
