What does a ring size chart mean in mm, US, UK, EU and JP?

Treat the millimetre measurement as the physical reference, then convert it to the seller’s sizing system without mixing diameter and circumference.

A ring size chart translates a physical ring measurement into labels used in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Ireland, EU, France, Switzerland, Japan, Korea and China. The label is useful when you are ordering, but the millimetre dimension is what describes the ring itself.

Start by asking one precise question: does the millimetre figure mean inner diameter or inner circumference? That distinction prevents the most expensive chart mistake. A 17.32 mm inner diameter is not a 17.32 mm inner circumference. They describe different lengths around the inside of the band.

How do you read a ring size chart correctly?

Read the chart from the physical measurement to the national label, not from one country number to another. First identify the measurement type. Then find the millimetre value. Only after that should you use the US, UK, EU, French, Swiss, Japanese, Korean or Chinese label for the order.

Inner diameter is the straight distance across the open space inside a ring. Measure from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge through the centre. The metal is not part of this dimension. Outside diameter includes the band and will make the ring appear larger than its wearable opening.

Inner circumference is the distance around the inside of the band. EU/ISO 8653 defines the size as this circumference in millimetres. Therefore, EU/ISO 54 means a 54 mm inner circumference. It does not mean a 54 mm diameter.

The national systems do not all use the same mathematical input:

  • US and Canada: diameter in millimetres = 11.63 + 0.8128 × size.
  • EU/ISO 8653: the size is inner circumference in millimetres.
  • France and Switzerland: size = circumference in millimetres minus 40.
  • UK, Australia and Ireland: letters use half steps. Circumference in millimetres = 37.14 + 1.28 × s, where s counts half-letter steps from A.
  • Japan, Korea and China: the Japanese relationship is diameter in millimetres = 13 + (n - 1) / 3, or n = 3 × diameter - 38.

These are not interchangeable labels. A row is equivalent only when the underlying physical measurements agree closely enough for the sizing system and displayed rounding.

The ring size calculator is useful when a seller gives one measurement and you need the other labels. It uses the same published relationships as the chart. If a calculator and a table appear to differ, check whether one shows diameter, the other shows circumference, or one has rounded the displayed value.

Which ring size is 17.32 mm?

The Mesurix reference value of 17.32 mm comes directly from the US and Canada formula. Insert size 7 into the formula:

11.63 + 0.8128 × 7 = 17.32 mm.

That is the inner diameter for US 7. Its corresponding inner circumference is 54.4 mm. The same reference row converts to UK N 1/2, EU/ISO 54, JP/KR 14 and FR 14.

The row is useful when a shop gives an unfamiliar label. A listing that says US 7 should point to about 17.32 mm inner diameter or about 54.4 mm inner circumference. A listing that says EU 54 means 54 mm circumference under EU/ISO 8653. The number 54 is not an alternative way of writing 54 mm diameter.

One whole US size changes the calculated diameter by 0.8128 mm. The associated circumference change is about 2.55 mm. That is why two adjacent US sizes can look close when drawn on a screen but feel different once the ring is on the finger.

The reference row also exposes a Korean sizing trap. Japan uses the 号 scale represented by the formula above, and the same number scale is used in Korea and China for this conversion. At the reference measurement, that gives JP/KR 14. However, some Korean shops use 호 for circumference in millimetres instead. Check for a millimetre figure next to the Korean number. If the listing does not identify the dimension, ask the seller before ordering.

Do not use US 7 as a substitute for measuring the intended finger. Fingers are largest late in the day and after heat, exercise or salty food. They are smallest on a cold morning. The spread across one day is easily a quarter of a US size. A remembered conversion can check a result; it cannot account for that changing fit.

Why do ring size charts disagree?

A chart can disagree with another chart without either table changing the ring. The tables may be displaying different dimensions, using different national formulae, or rounding at different stages. The first thing to compare is not the country heading. Compare the words beside the number: inner diameter or inner circumference.

US and Canada calculate diameter with this formula:

diameter (mm) = 11.63 + 0.8128 × size.

UK, Australia and Ireland use letters and half-letter steps with this formula:

circumference (mm) = 37.14 + 1.28 × s.

Here, s counts half-letter steps from A. That is why UK N 1/2 must not be rounded to UK N when the conversion is used for an order. A half step is part of the size.

EU/ISO 8653 takes a simpler naming route. The size is already the inner circumference in millimetres. France and Switzerland use the same physical circumference but subtract 40 from it. A 54 mm circumference is therefore EU/ISO 54 and FR 14.

Rounding is visible in the reference row. US 7 calculates to 17.32 mm inner diameter and 54.4 mm inner circumference. A shop may print 17.3 mm, 54.4 mm or a whole-number circumference depending on its table. Those displays carry different amounts of detail, but they refer to the same conversion row.

The Korean 호 convention creates a different kind of disagreement. Some Korean sellers use the same number scale as Japan. Others quote 호 as circumference in millimetres. A Korean number without its measurement type is incomplete information. Look for “mm” and determine whether it refers to diameter or circumference before comparing the size with a Japanese or international chart.

Home methods introduce another source of difference. A sheet of 80 gsm office paper is about 0.10 mm thick, and a human hair is about 0.07 mm. One whole US size is 0.81 mm of diameter, roughly eight sheets of paper. A paper strip can therefore introduce a meaningful error when its edge, overlap or thickness is ignored.

String and paper-strip methods also stretch and compress. The amount depends on how hard the material is pulled, so the result can read a quarter to a half size high or low. That is a failure of the measuring method, not evidence that one national chart is wrong.

Use one careful physical measurement as the anchor. Keep the original millimetre value, identify its dimension, and then convert it. Do not average two charts, choose the middle of conflicting labels, or treat a rounded number as more precise than the measurement that produced it.

Does the shop mean diameter or circumference?

The seller’s wording matters more than the seller’s country. “Inner diameter” means the straight distance across the opening. “Inner circumference” means the distance around the opening. Both are measured in millimetres, so “mm” on its own does not tell you which figure you are reading.

A value near 17.32 mm is a plausible inner diameter for US 7. A value near 54.4 mm is the corresponding inner circumference. Those numbers belong to the same reference row, but they cannot be substituted for each other.

EU/ISO listings usually make the distinction easier because the size itself is the circumference in millimetres. EU/ISO 54 means 54 mm circumference. France and Switzerland use the calculation circumference minus 40, so the same physical reference is FR 14.

US and Canada use the diameter formula published by Mesurix. Japan uses the diameter relationship involving n, and the same scale is used for the JP/KR reference in the chart. UK, Australia and Ireland use letters and half-letter steps generated from circumference. The systems may describe the same ring, but they do not name it with the same number.

If a listing gives only “17.32 mm”, read the surrounding text. It should say “inside diameter” or “inner diameter”. If it gives “54 mm”, check whether it says inner circumference, EU/ISO, France or Switzerland. If a Korean listing gives a 호 number, look for a separate millimetre figure and ask which dimension it measures when the wording is absent.

How do you use a chart with an existing ring?

An existing ring gives you a physical object to measure, provided it fits the intended finger. Choose one that passes over the knuckle without force and feels comfortable while worn. A ring from another finger is not a reliable substitute because finger sizes differ.

Place the ring flat on a stable surface. Measure the clear opening from the inner edge on one side to the inner edge on the opposite side. The line must pass through the centre. Do not measure from the outside edges, and do not include the metal thickness.

Match that inner diameter in millimetres to the chart. Then read the US, UK, EU, French, Swiss, Japanese, Korean or Chinese conversion from the same row. If the ring falls between displayed rows, retain the measured value rather than forcing it to the nearest printed label.

A similar band gives a better comparison. A narrow round band and a wide flat band can have the same inner diameter but feel different because the bands contact the finger differently. A shaped or tapered ring can also provide a different usable opening at the knuckle than at the base.

The spread across a day is easily a quarter of a US size. A cold, compressed reading can make a ring seem suitable on paper and too tight during ordinary wear.

Take more than one reading without changing the method. If a strip overlaps, read the point where its ends meet. If the result comes from string or paper, remember that the material stretches and compresses. Pulling harder can change the reading by enough to show a quarter to a half US size difference.

If the measurement is circumference, compare it with the EU/ISO column or convert it to the other systems. If it is diameter, compare it with the diameter column. For the reference row, 17.32 mm diameter becomes 54.4 mm circumference. A 17.32 mm circumference would be a different, much smaller physical measurement.
