Why do string and paper methods give different answers?
String and paper-strip methods can read a quarter to a half US size high or low depending on how hard the material is pulled. The problem is not the conversion table. It is that the material, tension and position can change before you mark the measurement.
String stretches when you pull it until the ends meet. If you mark it while stretched, the marked length can be shorter than the finger’s relaxed circumference. If you release the tension before marking, the result can become longer. The same string can therefore produce different readings on the same finger.
Compression creates another error. A soft string can flatten against the skin or squash beneath the crossing point. Strip width affects placement. A narrow cord can drop into a crease. A wide strip can bridge the curve of the finger or twist into a diagonal. Either error changes the path being measured. Keep the strip level around the finger and repeat the measurement if an edge rises or falls.
The scale of the error is easy to underestimate. A sheet of 80 gsm office paper is about 0.10 mm thick. A human hair is about 0.07 mm thick. One whole US size is 0.8128 mm of diameter, so eight sheets of 80 gsm paper are roughly one US size in diameter. A mark displaced by a few millimetres can therefore affect the final size choice.
Use a smooth, non-stretch paper strip rather than elastic string when taking the home measurement. Do not use a strip that has been pulled, folded or sharply creased at the mark. If two readings disagree, inspect the tension and placement before averaging them.
How do you measure ring size with a paper strip?
A paper-strip measurement records the circumference around the finger. The useful result is the distance from the strip’s end to the overlap mark, measured in millimetres after the strip has been removed and laid flat.
What should you prepare before wrapping the finger?
Use ordinary office paper and cut a strip long enough to go around the finger with an overlap. Keep the paper smooth. It must be narrow enough to sit level around the finger, but not so narrow that it curls, cuts into the skin or disappears into a crease.
A strip cut with straight, parallel edges is easier to check than a tapered piece. Keep the strip’s width consistent at the place where the overlap will be marked. A torn edge can make the starting point ambiguous, so trim it if necessary.
Choose the exact finger and the hand on which the ring will be worn. Fingers on the two hands are not interchangeable measurements. Decide if the measurement is for the ring’s resting position at the base or the largest knuckle it must cross, then record both positions rather than relying on memory.
How should the strip sit around the finger?
Wrap the strip at a level line around the finger. Its edges should stay at the same height as they travel around the skin. A diagonal loop follows a longer path and can make the circumference appear larger than the ring position.
Bring the strip into light contact with the skin. Do not pull until the paper bends sharply, and do not leave a gap between the paper and the finger. The correct contact does not create an indentation. Hold the strip with the same gentle tension each time you repeat the test.
Keep the strip flat at the overlap. If it twists, straightens only at the mark or slips into a crease, remove it and start again. A clean setup is more useful than a precise-looking number produced from a badly placed strip.
How do you mark and measure the overlap?
Wrap the strip around the intended ring position. Hold one end still and mark the point where the other end crosses it. Mark the upper edge or the centre of the end consistently, rather than making a broad mark that covers several millimetres.
Remove the strip without moving the mark. Lay it flat on a calibrated ruler and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. Record the circumference, not just a guessed US, UK or EU label. The millimetre value is the original measurement that lets you check another sizing system later.
Repeat the process at least once with the same paper and the same light contact. If the results differ, check whether the strip twisted, whether the starting end moved or whether the mark was made after the paper had stretched or compressed. Do not treat a large disagreement as a reason to average two faulty setups.

When should you measure your finger?

How does band width change the choice?
Band width changes how a ring fits even when its nominal inner diameter is unchanged. The trade rule of thumb is about a quarter size up from 6 mm of width and about a half size up from 8 mm. A wide band can therefore need a larger choice than a narrow band on the same finger.
Check the seller’s finished band width before ordering. If the product page states 6 mm or 8 mm, apply the relevant rule of thumb to the larger base-or-knuckle result. This adjustment changes the fit choice; it does not change the mathematical conversion formula for the ring-size system.
Do not use width as a substitute for measuring the finger. Measure the circumference first, compare the base and knuckle, and then account for the band. A thin sample ring cannot prove that a wide finished band will fit in the same way.

How do you convert a circumference to a ring size?
Start by recording the measured circumference in millimetres. Then identify the sizing system used by the seller. EU/ISO 8653 is the most direct system: its size is the inner circumference in millimetres. A 54 mm circumference is EU/ISO 54 and equals US 7 in the reference conversion.
Other systems label the same inside of a ring differently. The reference row is 17.32 mm inner diameter, 54.4 mm inner circumference, US 7, UK N 1/2, EU/ISO 54, JP/KR 14 and FR 14. The millimetre values are close because a conversion from a diameter-based scale and a circumference-based scale involves rounding conventions.

For US and Canada, the formula is:
diameter (mm) = 11.63 + 0.8128 × size
For US 7, the calculation is 11.63 + 0.8128 × 7 = 17.32 mm. One whole US size changes the diameter by 0.8128 mm, which is about 2.55 mm of circumference. This is why a small-looking diameter difference has a real effect on fit.
For EU/ISO 8653, the size is the inner circumference in millimetres. A ring marked EU/ISO 54 has a 54 mm inner circumference. In the reference row, the corresponding US size is 7.
For France and Switzerland, subtract 40 from the circumference in millimetres. A 54 mm circumference gives FR 14. This is a circumference-based scale, so do not insert the number directly into the US diameter formula.
For the UK, Australia and Ireland, letters include half steps. The formula is:
circumference (mm) = 37.14 + 1.28 × s
Here, s counts half-letter steps from A. The reference conversion for US 7 is UK N 1/2.
For Japan, and the same scale in Korea and China, the formula is:
diameter (mm) = 13 + (n − 1) / 3
Rearranged, it becomes n = 3 × diameter − 38. A 17.32 mm diameter corresponds to JP 14. The reference row therefore lists JP/KR 14.
Korean sellers require a separate check. Korean shops use the same 호 numbers as the Japanese 号 scale, but some Korean shops quote 호 as the circumference in millimetres instead. Always look for a millimetre figure next to the number before treating a Korean 호 size as JP/KR 14.
Use the ring size chart or the ring size calculator after preserving the measured millimetre value. Do not convert a circumference directly with the US diameter formula. First calculate or obtain the inner diameter, then apply the US formula.
How can a calibrated screen measure ring size without a ring?

After calibration, fit the finger to the on-screen circle. Centre the finger instead of matching only one edge.
